We are looking for plays that prioritize laughter. Do we hope your funny plays are also thoughtful, meaningful, relevant and revelatory? Of course! But this prize is for plays intentionally written to be categorized as a comedy. If chuckles are a byproduct of your excellent writing, but ultimately your play would be categorized as a drama, this prize is not for you.

Yes! There are a wide range of comedic genres. We embrace them all.

We’re not looking for stand-up comedy shows. We are looking for plays. If your one-person show is a play, your submission is welcome.

Yes, so long as all the writers of the play are female identifying, you can submit your play.

Nope. We love musicals, but we’re looking for plays. If your play has music but would not be categorized as a musical, your submission is welcome.

We ask that you share a brief synopsis of your play (50 words or less) and your play’s developmental history, if any (100 words or less).

In an effort to combat the centuries-old false narrative that men are funnier than women, this prize has been designed specifically to celebrate comedic women writers. If you feel that this mission is in line with your gender identity, we welcome your submission.

A diverse team of theatre professionals will participate in the adjudication process. We recognize that comedy is subjective, so selections of each play will be read by at least two different readers.

Yes, in the 2026/2027 season there will only be one winner. However, we will announce a group of semi-finalist and finalist plays. These playwrights and plays will be featured on our website, and writers will be invited to attend the Jokes on Her Comedy Prize Industry Reading in New York.
